Today marks the start of the annual Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence, led by the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA). IANSA is a founding member of the Control Arms coalition.

The Week of Action highlights the international campaign to stop the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. Last year, participation during the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence (WoA) included activities in over 80 countries, including many that had a clear focus on the Arms Trade Treaty, along with the UN Programme of Action on small arms, and the Disarming Domestic Violence campaign of the IANSA Women’s Network.

Many Control Arms members are coordinating actions during this week. For example, in Mexico the IANSA Survivors Network and other partners such as the Centro de Estudios Ecuménicos will coordinate a roundtable event to bring together government and civil society. In FYR Macedonia, the Civil Centre for Freedom has planned a press conference and online activism. The Kenya Action Network on Small Arms will do extensive media outreach to highlight how a strong ATT is needed to prevent diversion of weapons to illicit markets.
