Overwhelming majority of
world's governments vote to start work on an international
Arms Trade Treaty
Today at the United Nations, the majority of the world’s governments took the first step towards a global Arms Trade Treaty to prevent international arms transfers that fuel conflict, poverty and serious human rights violations. The vote comes three years after the launch of a campaign which has seen over a million people in 170 countries calling for a Treaty.

Bullets from Greece, China, Russia and United States found in rebel hands in Democratic Republic of Congo
Bullets manufactured in Greece, China, Russia and the USA have been found in the hands of rebel groups in the Ituri District of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is under a UN arms embargo. The research from the Control Arms Campaign underscores the urgent need for an Arms Trade Treaty to stem the flood of arms into conflict zones and is released today, a week before an expected vote at the United Nations on a resolution to start work on the Treaty.

77 governments champion resolution for an Arms Trade Treaty
In a massive show of support for stronger arms controls at the United
Nations in New York, 77 governments co-sponsored a resolution tabled today to start work on a global Arms Trade Treaty. Many more governments are expected to back the initiative in the coming days.

Treaty proposal, urges more reference to human rights
International campaigners welcomed the tabling of
a draft proposal revealed today by a group of seven
key governments to achieve an Arms Trade Treaty in
the United Nations. However the Control Arms campaign
- Amnesty International, Oxfam International and the
International Action Network on Small Arms also criticised
the draft for failing to include the respect of human
rights which must be a fundamental requirement of
an Arms Trade Treaty.

The UN world conference on small arms has collapsed without agreement, despite the majority of governments, including the European Union, and many African and Latin American governments, backing tougher controls on the international trade in small arms and light weapons.

UN Secretary General receives world's largest photo petition for tougher global controls on the arms trade
The Control Arms campaign, Amnesty International, Oxfam International and International Action Network on Small Arms, today presented a visual petition by one million people from over 160 countries calling for tough global controls on the arms trade and an Arms Trade Treaty.
The Million Faces Petition was handed over to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan by Julius Arile, a survivor of armed violence from Kenya and the millionth person to sign the petition
