Overwhelming majority of world's governments vote to start work on an international Arms Trade Treaty

Today at the United Nations, the majority of the world’s governments took the first step towards a global Arms Trade Treaty to prevent international arms transfers that fuel conflict, poverty and serious human rights violations. The vote comes three years after the launch of a campaign which has seen over a million people in 170 countries calling for a Treaty.

Campaigners for an Arms Trade Treaty will today attempt to lobby all 192 United Nations government missions in 192 minutes, in the run up to an expected vote on a resolution to start work on the Treaty at the UN next week.

Bullets from Greece, China, Russia and United States found in rebel hands in Democratic Republic of Congo

Bullets manufactured in Greece, China, Russia and the USA have been found in the hands of rebel groups in the Ituri District of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is under a UN arms embargo. The research from the Control Arms Campaign underscores the urgent need for an Arms Trade Treaty to stem the flood of arms into conflict zones and is released today, a week before an expected vote at the United Nations on a resolution to start work on the Treaty.

Nations in New York, 77 governments co-sponsored a resolution tabled today to start work on a global Arms Trade Treaty. Many more governments are expected to back the initiative in the coming days.

Control Arms campaign welcomes Arms Trade Treaty proposal, urges more reference to human rights

International campaigners welcomed the tabling of a draft proposal revealed today by a group of seven key governments to achieve an Arms Trade Treaty in the United Nations. However the Control Arms campaign - Amnesty International, Oxfam International and the International Action Network on Small Arms also criticised the draft for failing to include the respect of human rights which must be a fundamental requirement of an Arms Trade Treaty.

UN Secretary General receives world's largest photo petition for tougher global controls on the arms trade

The Control Arms campaign, Amnesty International, Oxfam International and International Action Network on Small Arms, today presented a visual petition by one million people from over 160 countries calling for tough global controls on the arms trade and an Arms Trade Treaty.

The Million Faces Petition was handed over to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan by Julius Arile, a survivor of armed violence from Kenya and the millionth person to sign the petition

AK-47 is world's worst regulated weapon according to new report

The Kalashnikov assault rifle will remain the most widely-used weapon in conflict zones for at least the next 20 years because it is so poorly regulated, according to a new report by the Control Arms campaign released at the start of the UN world conference on small arms and light weapons in New York.

Almost one in three people affected by gun crime

A survey of people in six countries, released by the Control Arms campaign, reveals that on average, 30 percent have been the victim of gun crime or know someone who has been in the last five years, and many more are living in daily fear of armed violence. The survey also demonstrates high levels public support for stronger international arms controls.
