After months of diligent campaigning, members of the Control Arms Coalition met with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in a handover ceremony on Tuesday, July 3rd. Salil Shetty (Amnesty International), Ross Robertson, MP (New Zealand), Bishop Elias Taban, Dr. Ogebe Onazi (IPPNW), Jasmin Galace (PhilANCA), and Julius Arile, the Control Arms campaign’s one millionth supporter each gave remarks during the ceremony.
While receiving the handover of the global petition and the Parliamentarian, Interfaith, and Medical Declarations, the UN Secretary General praised the efforts of the coalition noting that “the world is overarmed and peace is underfunded.” Referring to the diverse spectrum of organizations that make up the coalition, the Secretary General further noted “your determination has helped us get this far and your continued pressure and activism will help make a treaty a reality.”
