As part of the “100 Days of Speaking Out!”, a countdown to the treaty negotiations, Control Arms will regularly feature stories and profiles of different people who support a bulletproof ATT.
“Every day in our country, people are faced with the damage caused by the irresponsible trade in conventional arms. Real peace, security for people and property, and harmonious development cannot exist in this environment.” – Yaoundé Declaration, 2012
Representatives from across Central Africa participated in a workshop hosted by CCFD-Terre Solidaire last week. The meeting took place in Yaoundé, Cameroon from 16-18 May and brought together a number of civil society organizations and representatives from the regional office of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The agenda examined the subject of arms control in national as well as the regional context, and also explored the role of civil society in advocating for a bulletproof Arms Trade Treaty. Terre Solidaire has been involved in Control Arms since 2003 and this workshop was an opportunity to build momentum across the sub-region and strategize with other partners.
The workshop produced a detailed Declaration that outlines a strong vision for the ATT that all participants will share with their national governments prior to the negotiations.
