Swaziland observes its independence day today, and the southern African nation has one more reason to celebrate thanks to their recent action at the United Nations. On 4 September 2013, Swaziland became the Arms Trade Treaty’s newest signatory when H.E. Mr. Zwelethu Mnisi,Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Swaziland signed on behalf of his country.

Swaziland is largely a transit country but also a purchaser of arms. The ATT’s framework of regulation will help transit countries to play a more active role in assessing how the arms that cross their borders will be used and if they are likely to be diverted along the way.

Since opening for signature on 3 June, the Arms Trade Treaty has seen a surge in support both from countries signing and ratifying the agreement. Swaziland becomes the 84th States to sign the landmark Treaty that can save countless lives by regulating the irresponsible arms trade. Control Arms welcomes this action and encourages all States to sign the Treaty in advance of the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly later this month.
