As part of the “100 Days of Speaking Out!”, a countdown to the treaty negotiations, Control Arms will regularly feature stories and profiles of different people who support a bulletproof ATT.
With just over a month left before the nations of the world gather at the United Nations in New York City, religious leaders and faith-based organizations are raising their voices for a strong Arms Trade Treaty. Among these religious leaders is The Most Reverend KG Hammar. The Archibishop Emeritus of the Church of Sweden spoke with Control Arms in an interview where he shared his views on the ATT.
“As all religious traditions have peace as a core value and with the growing experience that use of violence (weapons) cannot solve the conflicts of today, religious communities could make a difference in democratic societies. Therefore it is a huge responsibility for religious leaders to make their communities aware of these things and also of the ATT as a possible first step to change things, if it will lead to a robust treaty that can decrease the sales of weapons and not only make the sales legal.”
