UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon met international armed violence survivors and Control Arms ‘Millionth Face’ and Kenyan marathon runner Julius Arile here at the UN last night. Ban was amongst hundreds of delegates, UN figures and NGOs at the Australian government’s evening reception on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT.) He met a number of officials as well as campaigners such as Julius.
Ban heard Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator Bob Carr make an impassioned speech, in which he highlighted the scale of the devastation caused by the unregulated arms trade, with thousands of people killed each week.
Carr emphasized the tremendous progress already made and the importance of achieving a robust ATT. He was honest about the scale of the challenge and passionate about the scale of the opportunity.
